The residue from soot and smoke is oil-based, so they won’t clean up like many other household messes that are water-based. The second thing to keep in mind is that the bricks on your fireplace are very porous, so many of the cleaning products that you might use will just go into the holes the bricks contain and the liquid will sit there. The dirt will ultimately stay on the bricks and it becomes harder to remove the cleaning products.
